DTI issues standards for equal leg steel angle bars

Davao City (15 August) -- WITH the proliferation of substandard Equal-leg Steel Angle Bars in the local market today, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) through the Bureau of Product Standards (BPS) issued Memorandum Circular No. 099, series of 2008.

The said BPS memorandum provides details of the implementation of the Philippine National Standards (PNS) 657:2008 Hot-Rolled Steel Sections - Equal Leg Angle Bars specifications.

BPS said that such PNS will ensure the safety of the consuming public especially that it has already been declared mandatory as per Department Administrative Order No. 07, series of 2008.

The BPS, through its Product Certification Division, recently met with the industry and other stakeholders and coordinated with the industry associations for the implementation of this particular standard.

As a result of the meeting and coordination, it was agreed to adopt the following timetable for the implementation of the PNS 657:2008Hot-Rolled Steel Sections - the mandatory certification which includes compliance to Philippine Standards (PS) and Imported Commodity Clearance (ICC) started last July 1 while the market monitoring will begin on October 1.

Furthermore, BPS said that after October 1, angle bars found without the necessary PS or ICC license during the market monitoring shall be considered uncertified.

DTI 11 Officer-in-Charge Marizon S. Loreto said such move of the BPS will further protect consumers from fraudulent sale of angle bars.

"The Consumer Welfare and Trade Regulation Division (CWTRD) of DTI 11 will be enforcing this new PNS as soon as we are already allowed to conduct market monitoring," Loreto said. (DTI-PIA XI) [top]
