PGMA in Cebu tomorrow to grace blessing of Sacred Heart School new campus
Cebu City (23 August) -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will grace the blessing and inauguration of the new campus of the Sacred Heart School (SHS) - Jesuit in Canduman, Mandaue City at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow.
Mrs. Arroyo is an alumna of a Jesuit school Georgetown University in Washington, USA and was a professor of economics at the Ateneo de manila University.
The President will also lead the ceremonial unveiling of the school marker at the main lobby before attending a Pontifical Mass to be officiated by Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal at the school gymnasium.
Composing the reception party that will meet the President are His Eminence Cardinal Vidal, SHS president Rev. Ernesto Javier, SJ, Society of Jesus Father Provincial Fr. Jose Cecilio Magadia, Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes, 6th Dist. Rep. Nerissa Soon-Ruiz and Governor Garcia.
Based on the schedule, Pres. Arroyo is expected to be at the school for a total of three hours from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., the longest period she has so far spent in any activity in Cebu.
The SHS new campus has a total area of 8.5 hectares and houses the pre-school wing, the grade school, high school, and administration buildings, the high school gym, and a two-storey student canteen.
Soon to be constructed inside the campus are the school chapel in front of the grand lobby, an Olympic-size swimming pool, the grade school gym, a wooden basketball court with bleachers, a track oval, soccer fields, and the skills development center, a vocational outreach program of the school.
SHS started its operations in 1953 and became an independent school in 1955. The Chinese Community in Cebu requested the Jesuits who then belonged to the former Chinese Missions to establish a school for their children. In 1988, SHS was integrated into the Ateneo network of Jesuit schools.
At 2:30 p.m., a conferment of the "Order of Sikatuna with the Rank of Grand Cross (Datu)" to H.E. Yang Berhomat Pehin Datu Singamenteri Colonel Dato Seri Paduka Haji Mohammad Yasmin Bin Haji Umar, Deputy Minister of Defense of Brunei Darussalam is set at the Malacaņang sa Sugbo.
