Region XI hosts Mindanao consultation-dialogue on situation analysis of children in RP

Davao City (29 August) -- The Mindanao Consultation-Dialogue on the draft report on the Situation Analysis (SitAn) of Children in the Philippines was held Thursday, August 2, 2008, at the Grand Menseng Hotel, Davao City. This was bared by NEDA XI Regional Director Nicasio Angelo J. Agustin who welcomed the guests and participants to the forum.

Director Agustin said that the consultation-dialogue was mounted by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and NEDA to generate comments and recommendations from key stakeholders of children to enhance the draft SitAn report. He informed that the draft report provides a comprehensive analysis of the status of children in the country, particularly in the promotion of their rights to survival, development, protection, and participation.

Director Agustin also revealed that once finalized the report will serve as basis for UNICEF in drafting its next Country Program for Children (CPC) for the Philippines. UNICEF is currently implementing its 6th CPC, which runs from 2004 to 2009, and provides technical and financial assistance for programs and projects for children of selected provinces and cities in the country. For Davao Region, Davao City is a CPC 6 recipient area, Director Agustin said.

Former DSWD Secretary and Executive Director of the Council for the Welfare of Children Lina Laigo presented the SitAn during the dialogue. Four resource persons also gave their reactions to the sections of the SitAn on child's survival, development, protection, and participation. These are Davao City Councilor Angela Librado-Trinidad; Dr. Mae Dolendo, Chief of Clinics of the Davao Medical Center; Ms. Suzette Alino, Headmaster of the Ateneo de Davao University Grade School; and Ms. Honey May Suazo of KABIBA, an umbrella of Davao City NGOs providing services to children.

According to Director Agustin, NEDA, which chairs the National Steering Committee for CPC 6, will also play a vital role in the design of future interventions for children in the country, including those that are provided by international donor agencies, such as UNICEF. Aside from the Mindanao forum, a similar dialogue was undertaken in Cebu City for the Visayas area a week ago and the consultation for Luzon will be conducted probably next month, Agustin said.
