Eastern Visayas OFWs, dependents avail of OWWA Tulay Program

Tacloban City, Leyte (8 October) -- To bridge the gap of communication tapping today's global latest cyber technology among Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) and dependents, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) will launch the OWWA Microsoft Tulay Program in Eastern Visayas.

OWWA Microsoft Tulay program provides OFW and their families access to both technology and modular technology trainings, thereby training them Basic Computer Fundamentals, Advance course in website design, how to blog and how to use various social networking tools for self expression and stay connected with love ones.

Launching of the Tulay program in region 8 is set on October 14, 2008 at OWWA-8 regional office. This was revealed by OWWA Regional Director Ma. Evangelina Filamor in an interview.

According to Director Filamor, around 50 OFW and dependents in our place are expected to avail of the said program. Tulay (meaning bridge) will connect those filipinos working abroad and their families here by communicating constantly through the use of computer and internet.

Tulay program, Filamor added will likewise teach mostly OFWs and dependents the latest techniques and technologies through cyber communication. With the 14 (fourteen) Tulay training centers launched in different places locally and internationally it will equipt more filipinos working outside the country to contact their families through the easy and fastest way, through cyber communication.

The establishment of Tulay Training Centers otherwise known as the Community Technology Learning Centers (CTLC) in different places here and abroad, now serves filipinos and their families in Hongkong, Malaysia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan and Italy, while in our country Tulay trains OFW & dependents at OWWA NCR, Bicol, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Ilo-ilo, La Union & Zamboanga.

Filamor said about 10 computer sets were installed at OWWA-8 second floor office, with the help of the Blas F. Ople Center, the implementing arm of the project, through a grant from Microsoft's unlimited potential program in partnership with our office, OWWA.

This year, according to her Tulay will add a new tulay center in Taipei and additional computers and software for the Tulay center in Honkong. and ten new local facilities tulay centers in our country to include Baguio City, Tacloban City, Calamba City, Koronadal City, Tuguegarao, Davao City, San Fernando, Pampanga, Butuan City, Calapan City and a facility in Maguindanao province.

Accordingly, Tulay has trained over 14,000 individuals in the past four years. With its expansion Filamor said Tulay hopes to train nearly 25,000 more OFWs and dependents in the next three years.

Currently, Tulay Hongkong already offers classes six times a week.Around 1,699 participants from 12 batches have graduated from the program forming themselves into an organization known as DOLE-OWWA Microsoft Organization HK SAR or DOMOHK.

Microsoft, OWWA & The Ople Center aims to equip and transform lives of our OFWs with the Information Technology (IT) tools needed to learn more, earn more and reintegrate better with their families. (PIA-8) [top]
