Plan Phils now serving 6,000 families in Northern Samar

By Nene A. Manzanares

Catarman, Northern Samar (9 October) -- It is their fourth year in Northern Samar and Plan Philippines is getting stronger than ever. With the battlecry "Children are at the heart of everything we do!", this international, humanitarian, child-centered development organization started its operations in the province in July, 2004 in the municipalities of Lope de Vega and Catarman. They immediately expanded in 2005 and covered three more municipalities, namely San Roque, Catubig and Las Navas.

According to its program unit manager Jose Felipe Eduardo J. Rebueno II, they are now operating in 49 barangays with 6,000 sponsored families (SFs) as Plan members. These families are the main recipients of the different programs and services of the organization which focus on education, health, water and sanitation, livelihood, governance and capacity building, disaster risk reduction, gender and child protection. Child sponsorship is the basic foundation of Plan.

Plan Philippines believes that poverty presents a threat to the survival, development, participation and protection of the Filipino children who constitute nearly half of the population of the country.

In the implementation of their programs, this NGO will tackle issues affecting the Filipino child. These are malnutrition, child labor, child pornography, child trafficking, child prostitution, low child participation, substance abuse, poor child health, poor sanitation and hygiene and low school completion rate.

Utilizing the Child-Centered Community Development (CCCD) approach where the participation of community members and stakeholders is a must, Plan Philippines implement their projects through their two teams (Team A and Team B). Team A which is headed by Corazon V. Obra as its area supervisor covers the municipalities of Catarman with 11 barangays and Lope de Vega with 10 barangays. Team B on the other hand has Franco P. Guevara as the team leader or area supervisor and covers San Roque (8 barangays); Catubig (12 barangays) and Las Navas (8 barangays).

Plan was founded in Spain in 1937 and is now considered as one of the biggest international non-governmental organizations worldwide. Plan operates in 46 developing countries and 16 developed nations. (PIA-Northern Samar) [top]
