PIA Press Release

RP cannot afford to be complacent in face of global crisis - Malacanang

Manila (3 November) -- Press Secretary Jesus Dureza assured the people that the government will remain alert to the developments in the financial and economic fronts to ensure that Filipinos are provided all possible protection from the global crisis.

He added, however, that the Philippines cannot afford to be complacent in the face of the worldwide financial and economic turmoil.

Dureza, who was interviewed over Radyo ng Bayan program, said the government is stepping up the implementation of various programs and projects to soften the impact of the world financial crisis on the Filipinos.

He expressed optimist that because of its strong economic fundamentals as a result of the tough fiscal reforms instituted by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, the Philippines will be spared the hard blows of the crisis that some countries now are experiencing.

"We have to do something. We cannot be complacent," Dureza said, adding that the government is pursuing programs designed to help the poor by providing them livelihood opportunities.

At the same time, Dureza called on the people to set aside political and personal differences and unite for the common good.

The task of ensuring protection of Filipinos from the global crisis calls for national unity. "Tutukan natin ang dapat tutukan, gawin natin ang gawin as a country united," Dureza said.

"Ngayon, kailangan natin unity. Yan ang panawagan ng Pangulo for ourselves. I'm sure our sectors: the Church, Senate, House politicians will come around and help the President and help the nation," he added. (PIA-MMIO) [top]
