PGMA inaugurates Teletech's newest customer care center

Manila (7 November) -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo inaugurated Teletech's newest Customer Care Management Center (CCMC) in the country as the Philippines takes another step forward in its bid for leadership in the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry in the region.

Even at this early stage of its operation, the Teletech facility at the SM City Pampanga in Barangay Lagundi here already provides high-paying jobs to about 2,000 residents of Pampanga and other provinces in Region III.

The President was assisted in the ribbon-cutting and marker-unveiling ceremonies by Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Favila, Budget Secretary Rolando Andaya, Cabinet Officer for Region III Secretary Edgardo Pamintuan, Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) chairman Ray Anthony Chua, Teletech general manager and senior vice president Maulik Parekh, Mexico City Mayor Teddy Tumang, San Fernando City Mayor Oscar Rodriguez, Pampanga 3rd District Rep. Aurelio Gonzales and Pampanga 4th District Rep. Anna York Bondoc.

Touring Teletech's facilities after the inaugural rites, the President chanced upon 24-year-old, wheelchair-bound Alex Anthony Sonza conversing with a client abroad.

The hiring of persons with disabilities like Sonza, a victim of a car accident a few years back, earned for Teletech the 2008 Employer of the Year award from the Philippine Foundation for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled, Inc.

Teletech said the number of Filipino workers in its 1,720-seat delivery center here is expected to increase from the present 1,446 to 1,950 by the end of the year.

Teletech now employs some 20,000 workers in its 12 customer management centers in Fort Bonifacio, Pasay, Novaliches, Cainta, Dumaguete, Bacolod, Lipa, Cebu, Bacoor, Iloilo, Pampanga, and Sta. Rosa, Laguna.

From only 500 workers in 2003, Teletech became the fastest growing BPO company in the country following the President's meeting with Teletech President Kenneth Tuchman last year on the sidelines of the yearly World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Tuchman was so impressed with the President's vision for the BPO industry in the Philippines and the world-class Filipino workforce that he decided to increase Teletech's workforce to 25,000 by 2009.

Parekh said that the opening of the Pampanga facility is an affirmation of Teletech's commitment to help the country by opening more job opportunities in more cities.

"Pampanga's pool of highly competent talents, coupled with a good business environment, makes it the logical choice for the location of our newest, and so far biggest, delivery center in the country," Parekh said.

Teletech has also partnered with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) in the P5-million English Proficiency Scholarship for the "near-hires" or those who are not employed the first time they apply for jobs in Teletech but have potential to be good BPO staff.

With the President's support, the BPO industry has grown rapidly, thus creating thousands of jobs and further boosting the Philippines' standing as the most favorable BPO destination in the world after India. (PIA-MMIO) [top]
