PIA Press Release

Davao celebrates World Diabetes Day on November 14

by RG Alama

Davao City (11 November) -- Davao City has declared Nov. 14 (Friday) as World Diabetes Day, with Mayor Rodrigo Duterte signing Proclamation No. 15.

A city-wide celebration will culminate in a candle lighting ceremony dubbed as Bringing Diabetes to Light on World Diabetes Day. During the ceremony selected City Government employees will light up 246 blue candles forming a circle. The candles represent the 246 million persons in the world afflicted by Diabetes while the blue circle is a global symbol for the illness.

In his proclamation Mayor Duterte urges all Dabawenyos to help fight the disease and its life-threatening complications by increasing the awareness of the risk factors for diabetes, making healthy lifestyle choices and by providing care and treatment to those suffering from diabetes.

The proclamation is based on the United Nations designated World Diabates Day which would be celebrated every Nov. 14 beginning in the year 2007. The UN encourages the supporters of the UN resolution on Diabetes to fight the worldwide epidemic by helping ensure that individuals with diabetes have access to care, treatment and education.

The Davao Citywide World Diabetes Day celebration on Nov. 14 will be held in partnership with Handicap International, an international humanitarian organization based in Lyon, France. The Davao City Government through the City Health Office and Nutrition Division will lead the celebration.

On Nov. 13, a day before the actual World Diabetes Day, a Cooking with Diabetes contest will be held at SM Davao Event Center. The contest involves preparing a one-day meal plan for the diabetic patient (breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks) under a pegged budget of P200.

The contest is open to all Nutrition officers of the Davao City Health Office with the team leaders coming from the 10 pilot communities of the Handicap International Diabetes Project. (PIA) [top]
