Barangay health centers now capable of conducting diabetic screening

by Prix D Banzon

Davao City (12 November) -- Barangay health centers of Davao City are now capable of conducting diabetic screening after health workers were trained on the process.

June Obenza, community educator of Handicap International said they piloted the project in 10 barangays of Davao City. The project is in coordination with the Davao City Health Office, she said.

The Handicap International is an international non-government organization that works to improve the quality of life and the living conditions of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in developing countries and in post-conflict zones. It was set up in 1982 with headquarters in Lyon, France.

The organization also helps people in disabling situations including chronic disabling diseases such as diabetes.

Obenza said diabetes is becoming a real epidemic in the developing countries as it aims to limit the social and economic consequences of diabetes that can devastate families and eventually communities.

The Diabetes Project, she said is a three-year project in Davao where it receives funding support from the Ministere des Affaires Etrangeres - Luxembourg and Sanofi Aventis.

Also involved in the project are the Davao Medical Center, Davao Jubilee Foundation for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled, Inc. and the Davao Sugar Multipurpose Cooperative.

The ten areas in Davao City are Calinan Proper, Mintal, Pampanga, Lapu-lapu, Maa, Matina Aplaya, Talomo Proper, Toril, Barangays 5-A and 23-C.

Health professionals and workers in the health centers were trained on the prevention, diagnosis and management of diabetes.

She said each barangay health center conducts diabetes day where residents can access for diabetic screening, counseling, education session on diet and exercise.

Meanwhile, Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte issued Proclamation No. 15 declaring November 12 as World Diabetes Day in Davao City.

The order was issued in support to the World Diabetes Day in support of the UN Resolution.

Duterte through his order encouraged Davaoenos to help fight the disease and its life-threatening complications by increasing awareness of the risk factors for diabetes by making healthy lifestyle choices, and by providing care and treatment to those suffering from diabetes. (PIA) [top]
