Hedcor, gov't health units stage medical outreach

Davao City (19 November) -- Hedcor Tamugan, Inc. (HTI), in partnership with the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP), the Davao Dental Society (DDS), Davao City,Health Office, Tambobong barangay health office, and the Aboitiz Foundation recently held a medical and dental outreach in Barangay Tambobong, Baguio District, Davao City.

Free medical consultations, dental check-ups and tooth extractions, and general pediatrics were made available to about 330 residents of Barangay Tambobong. The Davao Dental Society also lectured the locals, especially the children, on proper brushing and dental care.

"We would like to thank Hedcor for giving us the opportunity to be of service to the people of Tambobong. Oral Health Awareness through dental education is our primary goal. We hope that we can together make Davao "Cavities Free City," commented Dr. Efren Venus, President of Davao Dental Society.

NCIP also contributed to the medical outreach. Medical doctors of NCIP lent their services in giving free medical consultations and in distributing the prescribed medicines.

"It is our honor to partner with Hedcor to help the less fortunate to get free health care", remarked Dr. Carlos Denia, NCIP.

Aside from the medical services, the residents also received about P50,000 worth of free medicines.

"In behalf of the Barangay Council of Tambobong, we are grateful that Hedcor is of service to the Indigenous Peoples who benefited from the medical and dental mission," said Brgy Captain Exequil M. Salandao.

The medical outreach is part of HTI's commitment to its host communities through its corporate social responsibility programs. These programs include infrastructure projects, energization, educational and health care projects, and employment opportunities which will amount to more than P600 million in a 25-year span.

HTI, an Aboitiz Power Corporation subsidiary is planning to tap the Kidale, Panigan, and Talomo Rivers to develop the 27.5-megawatt Tamugan Hydropower Project. Should the construction push through, pending the approval and awarding of the necessary permits from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the plants will generate 194 million kilowatt-hours of clean and renewable energy annually while preventing the release of more than 85,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalents (tco2e) into the atmosphere.
