PIA Press Release

No labor strike in Eastern Visayas in last 5 years

Tacloban City (November 30) -- There has been no labor strike in Eastern Visayas in the last five years, Department of Labor and Employment Region 8 Director Forter Puguon bared in a media interaction held recently at the DOLE Regional Office at Trece Martirez St., in Tacloban City.

Director Geonzon of the National Conciliation and Mediation Board in Region 8 affirmed Director Puguon's statement saying that the Department of Labor and Employment has been able to keep the labor situation in the Region in good condition.

Director Geonzon said that this is a manifestation of the high level of maturity acquired by the labor and the management in Region 8.

As proof, seven collective bargaining agreements in the Region have been forged without the help of the Department of Labor and Employment. These are the collective bargaining agreements of Philippine National Oil Company-EDC; PASAR, Leyte V Electric Cooperative, Mac Builders and Pepsi Cola, among others.

Director Puguon said that DOLE is taking care of the employer and employee knowing that without the employers, there will be an increased in the incidence of unemployment in the Region. This is without prejudice to the welfare and rights of the employees to be paid what is due them.

Periodic inspection of business establishments are conducted by the DOLE inspectorate, Director Puguon said. If there are deficiencies, the employers are made to comply or to correct the deficiency by paying the deficit.

In 2008, DOLE has conducted inspections at 873 business establishments with 14,100 workers. Of those inspected 766 are complying with the labor laws on minimum wage law; 107 are not complying. Of the 107 found not to be complying the minimum wage law, 21 have corrected their deficiencies and paid P123,000. To its 125 workers. The others are still being processed.

However, many times, the complaining employees do not want to risk losing their jobs and so they keep quiet when they are questioned. By doing so, DOLE cannot pin down the employer, he added.

The Department of Labor and Employment recently held a press conference in order to give time for all its eight attached agencies to interact with the local media.

The Press Conference was a part of the Service Caravan conducted as a countdown activity for the 75th anniversary of DOLE on December 8, 2008. (PIA 8) [top]
