No stopping PGMA from providing job opportunities to Filipinos

Tacloban City (February 1) -- The scaling up to some one million the jobs to be created in the first six months of 2009, is an indication that there is really no stopping President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in her sincere desire to provide Filipinos the opportunity to get better jobs, even at this time when the effects of the world economic meltdown is threatening to reel the country.

To help lessen the impact of the global economic meltdown, President Arroyo has directed the setting up of the Comprehensive Livelihood and Emergency Employment Program (CLEEP), in all the regions of the country.

CLEEP is designed to protect the most vulnerable sectors from threats and consequences of reduced or loss income as a result of the global crisis by providing emergency employment and funding and supervising livelihood projects.

CLEEP is aimed at achieving two crucial objectives: to build the capacities of Filipino workers and afford them the skills they need to compete in tougher job markets; and to create as many jobs as possible in the least possible amount of time for the poor through investments in public works and enterprise development.

The effort is built around the Super Regions Program and will produce jobs through road construction and maintenance, the maintenance of irrigation facilities, the establishment of competitive agricultural enterprise, and the promotion of enterprise development by expanding microfinance services for the poor throughout the country.

For this program, President Arroyo has assigned each member of her Cabinet to act as steward to a specific region in order to ensure and oversee the implementation of identified CLEEP programs in that region.

The Arroyo administration has also come up with measures to assist workers who have lost their jobs here and abroad due to the global economic crisis.

One measure is to come up with a website on available job vacancies. The jobless are advised to log on the Labor Department's Phil-jobnet website which provides a convenient, readily available job service 24 hours a day, seven day a week.

For displaced overseas workers, they are advised to avail of the free services and programs, which include livelihood support, counseling and guidance, that are geared at assisting them..

It is hoped that those qualified to avail of the program will take the opportunity being made available to them by the Government. (PIA 8) [top]
