Basey Mayor complies with RA 9003

Catbalogan City (February 3) -- Basey (Samar) Mayor Wilfredo Estorninos publicly announced his LGUs compliance to Republic Act 9003 otherwise known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.
It was learned that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, the country's newest climate change czar, is adapting hands-on monitoring on the compliance of local government units (LGUs) with the special law.
In Basey's State of the Municipality Address (SOMA) done on January 26, 2009, Estorninos proudly bared his project implementation towards the same goal, protection of the environment through solid waste management.
He said he has implemented "Save Basey Rivers" project by dismantling illegal settlers shanties lined along Basey's rivers. He added however, that he has provided relocation sites through DSWDs core shelter program that will benefit some 250 poor households (HHs).
The same LCE also allocated sanitary toilets for all needy Basaynons and hope to add more provisions for the 6 thousand remaining HHs without sanitary toilets.
The national government is also advocating recycling and re-use to lessen volume of garbage which emits methane, a by product experts say as among greenhouse gases that drive climate change, the phenomenon also known as global warming.
Basey Mayor said the SB has drafted a resolution to reduce waste by segregation.
Under RA 9003, primary enforcement and responsibility for solid waste management are with LGUs.
Mayor Estorninos declared that he has sent his employees to an immersion mission in "cleaner cities" primarily adhering to the mandate.
Estorninos added that he still included this plan in the future to make sure his LGUs compliance to Republic Act 9003.
He also noted, he said that the dirt thrown to the rivers in Basey pollutes the water system which may bring about diseases in the future.
Estorninos outlined food and nutrition, education, health and environmental sanitation in his plans for Basaynons in the year 2009 and even beyond. (PIA Samar) [top]
