DTI launches projects to combat crisis

Davao City (6 February) -- THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has lined up a number of projects that will address various concerns pertaining to the present global economic bleak.

With the growing number of retrenched workers resulting from the closure of some affected companies, the department, through the mandate of Trade Secretary Peter B. Favila, immediately crafted measures that can mitigate the on-going global economic meltdown.

DTI 11 Regional Director Marizon S. Loreto said all of the department's regional and provincial offices will be designing projects appropriate in their respective areas of jurisdiction.

These specially-designed projects will be under a banner program of the Arroyo administration's Comprehensive Livelihood Emergency Employment Program (CLEEP).

CLEEP is the umbrella of the several poverty alleviation programs of the government viewed as an immediate response to the impact of the financial crisis, especially on unemployment.

"We have to see to it that we get things off the ground immediately. As always, we have to be ready to provide the necessary assistance to anyone needing such, especially to those who have been affected by the said situation," she said.

Loreto added that a menu of business opportunities and micro enterprises will be made available to those who wish to pursue small businesses in order to generate income and jobs.

Likewise, DTI small and medium enterprise (SME) counselors are being tapped to provide business consultancy services that include the "how to's" and other relevant information.

Among others, candle-making, skin care manufacturing, repair shop operation, rice dealership, dried fish production, convenience or sari-sari store operation, hog-raising, and many more are the business opportunities found in the menu. (DTI XI/PIA XI) [top]
