Davao City (7 February) -- A total of 14,000 scholarship vouchers will be given out in Region XI this year as part of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's Scholarship Program.
Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) regional director Elmer Talavera bared the increased allocation given by the president for the scholarship program.
From the previous voucher worth P5, 000 each, the grant is now increased to P10, 000 per voucher.
"The scholar is also given a daily allowance of P60 which for a regular student is good enough to be used for transportation and food allowance," Talavera said.
These are the factors found by the agency which hindered potential scholars to pursue and use the vouchers.
From last year's P1 billion budget allocation for scholarships, it was increased to P5.6 billion this year.
The national government expects 800,000 Filipinos to benefit from the increased budget.
Region XI gets 5 percent from the national allocation with Davao City/Davao del Sur receiving the bulk of the scholarship slots.
TESDA provincial director Engr. Nestor Tabada bared some 6,000 scholarship vouchers made available for Davao City and Davao del Sur.
"The province has the most number of technical vocational schools that is why it usually receives the most number of scholarship certificates." he said.
The agency supports scholarship programs for automotive manufacturing, metals and engineering, construction, heating, ventilation, airconditioning and refrigeration, electronics, agriculture and fishery, processed food and beverage, health services, ICT, aviation and land transport, garments, and tourism.
To increase the number of scholars, TESDA plans to promote the program in all schools in the provinces. This way, more students will be aware on these tech-voc (technical vocation) opportunities especially when they cannot afford a degree course.
TESDA clarified that interested students may immediately go to the provincial office and take the YP4SC profiling where one can determine his occupational interest as well as his skills as a big factor in choosing the right course to take.
The TESDA office will then provide the client with the list of TESDA-accredited schools offering those courses and possibly offering those scholarship vouchers for the client to avail. (PIA XI) [top]
