PIA Press Release

BOC expects efficient job with new exam area

By Mai Gevera

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) inaugurated yesterday the latest addition of Designated Examination Area (DEA) in its 15 collection districts nationwide.

Right across the Philippine Ports Authority in Sasa, Davao City is the new location of the DEA.

The 12,000 square meter land area was donated by the Reta family to the BOC as a way of solving the long-time problem on finding a wide area suited for the examination process being done by the BOC.

"We are thankful to the Reta family for providing the government this area which we found very necessary in efficiently doing our job," said BOC Commissioner Napoleon Morales.

The land area permitted BOC to use it for examination purposes for the next 25 years. Unlike any other case, BOC was not asked a single penny for the land use.

The area can accommodate 800 to 1,000 container vans, which the previous examination area failed to provide for. "This DEA could help us resolve smuggling cases as well as facilitate trade more efficiently," he said.

District collector Ronnie Silvestre bared that BOC increased its target from last year's P1.7 billion to P2.1 billion. The 27 percent high on its target is believed to be achievable as the district collection finds no disruption or problem on its collection in the first few months this quarter.

However, Silvestre admitted that the new DEA could even improve the performance of BOC, significant to reach its new target. (PIA XI) [top]
