DOLE gathers GFC-affected industries of Mindanao

By Mai Gevera

Davao City (13 February) -- More than 100 stakeholders from all regions in Mindanao including Regions 4-A, 5, and 8 are convened today until tomorrow (Feb 14) for a Multi-Sectoral Conference initiated by the Department of Labor and Employment.

DOLE XI Regional Director Jalilo dela Torre that the office had already conducted consultations and laid out plans for the most vulnerable sectors with the global financial crisis such as the semi-conductor, electronics, and garments industries.

However, the department has also seen the need to consult with more economic sectors which may have been are soon to be affected by the GFC.

"We are beginning to feel the negative impact of the GFC on our workforce. Retrenchments, lay-offs, reduction of workdays, job rotation and repatriation of OFWs are now a daily occurrence." dela Torre said.

This pushed DOLE to gather Mindanao's agri-based industries which are believed to have been the least affected yet with the crisis.

This early, DOLE is consolidating general information on the effects of the GFC on industries like rubber, coconut, abaca, tuna, sardines, banana, and pineapple.

After identifying problems and issues from each agri industry, the body will the come up with a common position in addressing the problems.

This would also help out government agencies to identify and give importance on the kind of deliverable assistance along with timelines to help agricultural workers. (PIA XI) [top]
