PIA Press Release

Verzosa orders speedy resolution of cases vs PNP men on drugs

by Jemin B. Guillermo

Manila (13 February) -- The immediate resolution of pending drug cases involving personnel of the Philippine National Police (PNP) is given immediate attention.

Police Director General Jesus Verzosa has already ordered the immediate resolution of the pending administrative cases involving PNP personnel who were found guilty of using illegal drugs.

In the PNP online news, Verzosa said that he has instructed the Director of the Investigation and Detective Management (DIDM) and Commander of the Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operations Task Force (AIDSOTF), Police Director Raul M Bacalzo to oversee the resolution of said cases.

"I have issued a directive to General Bacalzo to give immediate attention to the pending cases involving PNP personnel who were found guilty of drug use as the PNP does not condone such type of actions," he said.

Verzosa has also assured the public that proper sanctions will be given to erring members of the PNP.

Records of the DIDM show that there are still 79 pending cases involving PNP personnel guilty of using illegal drugs.

Bacalzo disclosed that said cases are undergoing Summary Dismissal Proceedings and 26 other cases are under Pre-Charge Evaluation.

Meanwhile, PNP Spokesman Nicanor Bartolome clarified the statistics that came out regarding the number of PNP personnel who failed the random drug test conducted by the PNP.

He said that for 2008, only 13 personnel were found positive for using illegal drugs and they were already placed under summary hearing procedures.

He added that the earlier reported number of 216 PNP personnel found positive for drug use and the subsequent dismissal of 80 from the service covered the total for a period of ten years from 1999 to December of 2008.

Bartolome revealed that from the same 10-year period there were 24 PNP personnel suspended, 5 demoted, 2 dropped from the rolls for their failure to report for work and 5 resigned.

He said that the PNP is targeting another 25% of the total 125,000 police personnel to undergo the test for 2009. (PIA) [top]
