Lumad residents have now access to safe water

Mati City, Davao Oriental (14 February) -- Lumad residents belonging to Manobo and and Ata-Manobo of barangays Macambol and Cabuaya are now enjoying drinking safe and potable water after the city government of Mati under the leadership of Mayor Michelle Rabat constructed ground water wells and the development spring.

Mayor Rabat reported that 24 ground water wells were constructed in two barangays while one spring water project was developed in barangay Cabuaya. More than 1,200 households representing 90 percent of the total households have benefitted from these projects.

The lady mayor said the projects were made possible through the assistance of BHP Billiton, an Australian-based mining firm which has a nickel exploration project in the area. The BHP Billiton extended financial and material resources while the city government provided the technical assistance.

Rabat said the City Health Office conducted massive information and education campaign among the residents on the need to practice proper sanitation and hygiene to maintain clean and potable water. In fact, the city government has to see to it that the chlorination system is sustained in the spring water development project, the mayor added.

On the other hand, kagawad Resty Sayabo of barangay Macambol said that the barangay council is very thankful on the generous gesture extended by BHP Billiton and the city government in providing safe and potable water to the lumad residents who have sacrificed to source out their water from adjacent communities for so many years.

"Magpadayon unta ang BHP Billiton ug hatag ug serbisyo pinaagi sa mga proyekto alang sa mga lumad" (hopefully, the BHP Billiton will continue to provide services through development projects for the indigenous peoples), Sayabo added. (MGO/PIA XI) [top]
