DOH works on hitting maternal health target

Davao City (18 February) -- After admitting difficulty in hitting the maternal health target embodied in the Millennium Development Goals (MDG), the Department of Health is now mapping health facilities nationwide.
DOH Assistant Secretary Paulyn Rosell-Ubial bared that the country might not be able to reduce the 162 maternal deaths by 100,000 to a mere 52 deaths by 2015.
This is due to the high maternal mortality ration in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) which pulls down Philippines ' status in this particular goal.
However, DH is determined to hit the target by reducing fertility rate and of the women attended by unskilled attendants.
We have learned that 70 percent of the attendants in ARMM are unskilled. This has brought big risks in the lives of mothers," said Ubial.
Such scenario has led the health department to map out existing health facilities in the country to determine which areas lack health resources. This will then enable the government to place these resources at the right area. (PIA XI) [top]
