Hedcor partners with students in stabilizing Darong riverbanks

Davao City (18 February) -- Last January 30, 2009 about 60 students, 15 parents and teachers from Darong Elementary School and about 20 residents from Barangay Darong and Hedcor employees took the long noonday trek along the rocky riverbanks of Barangay Darong, Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur to plant bamboo seedlings for a community tree-planting project.

"We are doing this to help ourselves and the residents near the riverbanks," said Joemar Cosmo, a Grade 6 student of Darong Elementary School. "These seedlings we plant when fully grown will help prevent flash floods and since our school is located near the river, we are concerned of the environment around us," Cosmo added.

More than 300 bamboo seedlings were planted during the activity with almost a hectare of riverbank covered. The tree planting activity is part of Hedcor Sibulan, Inc.'s commitment to the community and the environment. HIS committed to protect & preserve 1,000 hectares of the Mt. Apo Natural Park.

This was formalized through the Watershed Management Plan (WMP) Memorandum of Agreement between HSI and DENR.

Also present during the activity was Hedcor vice president Gregorio Jabonillo. He taught the students on how to properly handle and plant the seedlings.

"Bamboo is the most ideal plant to be grown in the riverbanks. It grows vigorously in rocky soils and its roots hold the soil quite well." Jabonillo pointed out.

In addition to the WMP, pledged to plant 25,000 of trees as its contribution to the United Nations Environment Programme campaign dubbed Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign. The global campaign aims to plant 7 billion trees by December 2009.

Hedcor, Inc. and HSI, subsidiaries of the the Aboitiz Power Corporation, continue producing clean and renewable energy, thus, remaining consistent of its brand of power generation, Cleanergy. HSI is currently developing a run-of-river hydropower project which will generate 212 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy for Davao starting October 2009.

Utilizing a renewable energy source, the hydropower project will also prevent the release of at least 95,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalents (tCO2e) into the atmosphere. (HEDCOR/PIA) [top]
