PIA Press Release

22 Ifugaos complete community broadcasting training

by Vency D. Bulayungan

Lagawe, Ifugao (21 February) -- For believing that a community radio station can bridge the gap between the government and the people, the provincial government and the Tambuli Foundation commended the municipal government here and the 22 participants for undergoing a ten day training on broadcasting.

Governor Teddy Baguilat in his message read by Provincial Administrator Brenda Saquing, said that he extols the municipal government here for the strong political will to support and undertake this program. "A community radio station is an uncharted territory and whose return of investments for them is non-realizable thus it was a courageous thing of them to take on this great challenge," Baguilat said.

The ten days training which was conducted by Ms Ann Sablan, a professor of the Isabela State University, is in preparation for the establishment of a community radio station here, the first of its kind in the province. This is a joint project of the National Nutrition Council, Tambuli Foundation, the provincial and Lagawe municipal government units.

Aside from the musical radio station in the municipality of Alfonso Lista and local cable TV in four major municipalities here, the province lacks media facilities.

Baguilat said that through this radio station, the people can be able to express their grievances, sentiments, concerns and issues while the government can inform the people of their programs projects and other activities. This way, the political leaders and the community can understand each other better and work hand in hand towards the realization of our common goal which is peace, progress and development for Ifugao, he added.

On the other hand, Mr. Louie Tabing of the Tambuli Foundation pointed out that the radio station in their community is an extension of their families where the message is relevant to the community in many ways. The community radio is a tool for development, and the participants are the intermediary showing people how to take advantage of the many opportunities to bootstrap themselves and improve their lives, Tabing said.

Municipal Administrator Alejandro Pahiwon said that the graduation rites of the participants is the beginning of volunteerism which is the spirit of a community radio station. This radio station is a venue for the barangay folks to hear issues and concerns affecting their lives and the community they live in, he said.

Composed of representatives from the different sectors national, provincial, municipal employees and the Philippine Information Agency here, the newly trained broadcasters agreed to name the radio station Radyun di Imipugo (Radio of the Ifugao people), but this has still to be approved by the Community Media Council (CMC).
