DTI to create more micro industries in Davao City

Davao City (25 February) -- As a response to the impending increase of the country's unemployment rate resulting from the global economic meltdown, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) embarks on initiatives towards the creation of more micro industries in Davao City.

Targeting to create at least 550 jobs, DTI-Davao City Field Office is focusing on three major objectives, namely: to provide livelihood opportunities that will augment the income of families affected by the present economic crunch; to develop and enhance the technical capability of the local residents to make them more productive citizens of the community; and to help producers meet their commitment with their markets through sub-contracting scheme.

The project is the response of DTI's Field Office in the city to the national government's call to create immediate livelihood opportunities through enrolling projects to the Comprehensive Livelihood Emergency Employment Program (CLEEP).

These projects include the creation of mobile or rolling stores and mobile shoe-repair or shoe-shine shops, honey bee production, wellness program for call centers, and sub-contracting.

Sub-contracting involves hiring people outside a company in order to deliver the volume of products required by another company or market on or before the agreed deadline.

DTI 11 regional director Marizon Loreto said that for these identified projects to succeed, certain interventions shall be made.

"DTI, along with other stakeholders and cooperators, will have to identify as well the needed interventions. These interventions could be in the form of linking trained weavers with local producers, conducting skills trainings, and helping the beneficiaries have access to financing," Loreto said.
