Davao Sur to push for investment-friendly climate

by RG Alama

Davao City (27 February) -- The Davao del Sur provincial government intends to push for an investment-friendly climate which would attract more investors to the province.

This was said by Provincial Governor Douglas Ra Cagas during a site visit by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to the P5.1 billion hydropower project by Hedcor last Feb. 26 at the power plant construction site in Barangay Sibulan, town of Santa Cruz located in the southern Davao province.

Citing the project as a private investment, the Governor said that the role of the Government is to make sure that the province is conducive for investments and businesses.

Governor Cagas cited the many benefits that the investment has brought not just to Davao del Sur province and to the municipality of Santa Cruz but also to the Barangays of Sibulan and Darong.

One of them is the construction and rehabilitation of an estimated 40-kilometer stretch of road network which are used by the agricultural communities as farm-to-market roads. Another benefit the Governor cited is the employment brought about by the new power investment. The sharing of wealth between the local government and the indigenous communities is another benefit.

During the interaction between President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and the tribal chieftain Rogelio Manapol of which his tribe's ancestral domain covers the Sibulan project. The IPs will receive about 30 cents per kilowatt hour as royalties and 30% of these royalties will be used for livelihood projects while the rest would be for education and health projects not just for the IPs but also for migrant farmers.

Governor Cagas also said that the power generated from the 42.5 megawatt hydropower project could also be purchased by the Davao del Sur Electric Cooperative or Dasureco.

The hydropower project aims to supply power to Hedcor's sister company Davao Light and Power Company which services Davao city and some towns of Davao del Norte. (PIA XI) [top]
