10th ID troops in separate clashes with NPA, JI
Panacan, Davao City (10 March) -- Troopers of 67th Infantry Battalion under Lieutenant Colonel Henry Doyaoen, acting on a tip from the civilian populace, encountered undetermined number of NPA's in Baganga, Davao Oriental at 4:30 am today that resulted to the recovery of one M16 Rifle, one ICOM radio, combat packs, tents and subversive documents.
Based from field report, the NPA terrorists threatened the populace in Baganga, Cateel, and Boston to go against the flagship project of the government to connect and pave the road from Mati, Davao Oriental to Lingig, Surigao del Sur.
The said project, when completed, is expected to boost investments in the area and will allow the rapid flow of goods and services between the two provinces.
One member of the CAFGU Active Auxiliary (CAA) identified as CAA Podpod was reportedly killed during the said encounter.
In a separate incident, elements of the 2nd Scout Ranger Battalion encountered early this morning at 4:40am more or less five suspected Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) members in Sitio Binaba, Purok Patong-84, Barangay Napnapan, Pantukan, Compostela Valley.
Acting on reports of armed men in the area, the Ranger section engaged the JI group at close range resulting in the recovery of one M79 grenade launcher with five ammunitions, four improvised explosive devices (IED) with four 81-millimeter mortar rounds, one ICOM Motorola radio, one binocular, wires and firing mechanism, assorted bomb parts, one magazine for pistol, holster, and personal belongings.
Significant during the said encounter was the capture of one suspected JI member identified as Giovanni de Ocampo who claimed that he is an MILF Commander.
Initial field report revealed that Ocampo was a trainor-expert in manufacturing IED's that has caused deaths of innocent civilians and destruction of properties in this part of Mindanao. His capture has preempted another plan to conduct bombing operations in the whole of Mindanao, particularly in the urban centers such as Davao, General Santos, and Kidapawan.
