Davao City (11 March) -- Of the 130,000 unemployed in the region, the Department of Labor and Employment XI is targeting to provide open 2,000 job opportunities to the unemployed sector this year.
DOLE XI assistant regional director Ofelia Domingo bared in yesterday's Kapihan sa SM that the region is working on the goal of posting a 4 percent unemployment rate and is bent to provide at least 75,000 jobs in its four-year plan.
DOLE undersecretary Rosalina Baldoz bared that there are 2 million Filipinos are unemployed nationwide out of the 37 million labor population.
The office has recorded 41,000 displaced or retrenched workers nationwide which was brought about by the global financial crisis. Most of the displaced workers come from the three industries greatly affected by the crisis, these are the electronics, garments, and automotive.
However, Baldoz announced that the said number is not alarming especially that the other industries are slightly affected.
Displaced workers are rather urged to take advantage of the various programs offered by DOLE to capacitate them and learn other skills.
Baldoz also announced that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is directing them to allocate 1.5 percent of their operating budget to hire displaced and retrenched workers which would temporarily give them work for six months.
The national government is set to reach the 180,000 job creation by the end of the year, specifically targeting the public sector to absorb the unemployed.
Meanwhile, DOLE XI reported that it has already 200 Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) have benefited from its business counseling program and around 3,000 individuals have underwent livelihood training. (PIA XI) [top]
