5–day "Tour of Ilocos Sur" kicks off Tuesday

Vigan City (29 April) -- Around forty–eight local cyclists, who are grouped into six teams, are competing for the crown for the 2nd Tour of Ilocos Sur that formally started Tuesday morning infront of the Provincial Capitol here.

The tour is compose of 5 laps such as: 1st lap – Vigan City to Sinait town; 2nd lap – Sinait town to Tagudin; 3rd lap – Tagudin to Cervantes; 4th lap – Cervantes to Salcedo; and the 5th lap – Salcedo to Vigan City.

The culmination of the bike tour will be on May 2, 2009 infront of the capitol.

The tour, which was launched in 2008 and was dubbed as "Lumba ti Bisikleta ti Ilocos Sur 2009," was spearheaded by the Provincial Government of Ilocos Sur headed by Governor Deogracias Victor "DV" B. Savellano in partnership with League of Civil Societies and the Ilocandia Bikers Organization.

Governor Savellano told that the tour will open the door of opportunity for the biker enthusiasts in the local, national and international bicycle tour competitions.

"Our Bicycle Tour is not just a contest but it would serve as training ground for our local bikers in preparation for national or international competition," Savellano said.

Provincial Board Member Jose Bonoan Jrs, the over-all tour director, said that the bicycle tour of Ilocos Sur is one of the strategies in promoting eco-tourism program in the province.

"This event is also an avenue for promoting health advocacy and consciousness and inculcate the value of discipline among the people through sports," Bonoan added.

According to Bonoan, each winner in every category as well as the over-all winners will receive cash rewards and other exciting prizes. (PIA Ilocos Sur) [top]
