DepEd expects better education after BEAM Project

By Mai Gevera

Davao City (2 June) -- Basic education in the country is expected to gain much-needed improvements after learning from the lessons of the Basic Education Access in Mindanao (BEAM) Project.

This was bared by Department of Education Assistant Secretary Jesus Mateo in a press conference yesterday in time for the completion ceremonies of the said project.

BEAM is an Australian-funded project which focused on lifting the basic education in the three regions of the country: Regions XI, XII and ARMM.

Region XI director Susana Estigoy said that the effects of the project may not be felt as early as now but it is a long-term process that would affect a bigger portion of the target beneficiaries.

However, as early as expected DepEd has observed developments especially from the 2004 Regional Assessment in Mathematics, Science, and English (RAMSE) baseline. It showed that students across Regions XI, XII, and ARMM have demonstrated higher achievement.

The exam results also showed that students whose teachers have attended BEAM training had achieved higher results than those who had not.

Data showed that the project has trained 28,578 teachers in English, Science and Mathematics in all grade and year levels on alternative teaching and learning strategies and techniques to improve and increase student performance.

BEAM also trained over 2,000 Asatidz (Muslim teachers) to qualify to teach Arabic language and Islamic Values Education in Government schools.

Also, there were 326 asatidz who graduated with a degree in elementary education with specialization in Arabic language and Islamic values. (PIA XI) [top]
