Panabo City (3 June) -- Panabo City sells the lowest priced manufactured basic and prime commodities among the urban centers in Davao del Norte, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) provincial field office said.
In an interview, Arnulfo Ganaan, division chief of the consumer welfare division, DTI-Davao del Norte bared his findings in the expanded weekly monitoring of prices conducted in the cities of Tagum and Panabo and in the municipalities of Kapalong and Sto. Tomas.
Ganaan explained that this could be due to the location of Panabo City with its closes proximity to Davao City where manufactured goods and prime commodities are shipped from manufacturers in Manila.
"Logistics wise, it takes just a shorter time to transport goods to Panabo City than to the rest of the urban centers where we are (conducting price) monitoring," he said.
Ganaan also cited market forces at play leading to the downtrends of commodity prices in Panabo City 's supermarkets and even among retailing outlets.
Leading supermarkets and groceries in Panabo City are having no choice but to bring down prices of commodities because of stiff competition among themselves and with other outlets of nearby urban centers, he explained.
"Consumers can easily compare prices because Panabo is near Davao City and Tagum City." he said.
Meanwhile, Ganaan said the expanded price monitoring of DTI down to selected municipalities covering retail outlets has helped the office check unreasonable price increases and manipulation at the community level.
"It is easy for us to monitor price differences and to know whether they (outlets) are fairly pricing commodities," he said.
On the other hand, DTI Davao del Norte field office Tuesday launched the "Presyo Diskwento: Para sa Mamimiling Pilipino" at the Gaisano Grand Mall of Panabo and at the Davao Central Warehouse Club.
Ganaan said the project tied up with leading supermarkets in urban centers is aimed at making available to the public discounted prices of basic and basic and prime commodities.
The project is also in fulfillment of the thrust of the national government to assist sectors mostly affected by the global financial crisis especially the overseas Filipino workers.
"But this is not just for our OFWs, this is for all of us," he said during the launching at the Gaisano Grand Mall of Panabo. (PIA XI) [top]
