Feature: Dengue is deadlier than AH1N1 virus

By Hazel F. Gloria

Cebu City (10 June) -- "Dengue is deadlier than the AH1N1 virus," Dr. Raymund Ogan, Cebu City Coordinator on Dengue informed the public to take Dengue prevention seriously.

Ogan stressed during the AGIO Forum recently that Dengue has continuously claimed deaths mostly children while no recorded casualty yet of AH1N1 in the country,

The doctor described Dengue fever as an "acute febrile viral disease characterized by sudden onset of fever for 3-5 days, myalgia, arthralgia, retro-orbital pain, anorexia, GI disturbances and rashes. "

Minor bleeding phenomena such as petechiae, epistaxis and gum bleeding may also occur at any time during the febrile phase, Ogan added.

Dengue fever is endemic in the Philippines since 1966, said D. Ogan. Reported dengue cases in Cebu City as early as the first six months of 2009 have already reached 319 with 9 deaths.

This figure however, is 45.37% lower compared to the same period in 2008 which had 584 cases with 25 deaths, Ogan said.

This year, Cebu City is under the state of Dengue Preparedness after it was placed under the state of dengue calamity on 2007 until early part of 2008.

DOH-7 records showed that the top 10 barangays with the most number of dengue cases in the city are; Kamputhaw with 28 cases and one death; Labangon with 21 cases and two deaths; Lorega has 16 cases and two deaths; Guadalupe with 14 cases and one death; Tisa has 14 cases and Carreta with 13 cases while Talamba and Punta Princesa have 11 cases; Calamba with 10 cases and Lahug with nine cases of dengue infection.

City Health Department with the Cebu City Officials, Mayor’s Management Team, Local Barangay and School Officials are hand-in-hand in conducting massive information campaigns and mist sprayings to affected barangays and all schools in Cebu City, this was reported.

During the launching of the government’s nationwide anti-dengue campaign in Tondo, Manila, Health Secretary Francisco T. Duque cited the role of the local chief executives in spearheading the campaign in their respective localities against the dreaded disease. (PIA-7/hfg) [top]
