BIR urges businesses to pay right tax

By Jean Duron-Abangan

Tagum City (11 June) -- As the Bureau of Internal Revenue intensifies its Oplan Kandado campaign, Tagum City Revenue District Officer (RDO) Ester Palala calls on business people to pay the government its due tax.

Palala cited the closure of four establishments in Tagum City as a warning to other business proprietors to religiously abide by the laws concerning tax payments.

BIR served on June 09 the closure order to Dolly Dai, owner of Kimlai, Honglai and Family Bodega as well as franchisee of Mandarin Restaurant---all are located in Tagum City.

BIR found Dai to have under-declared gross sales, depriving the government of its due value added tax computed at P1.7 million. Her establishments were also found through a surveillance operation to have failed issuing official receipts.

"Dapat na silang magbabayad nga tamang VAT; sa mga di pa narehistro, magparehistro na rin sila," she said in an interview during the padlock operation, Tuesday, which was led by BIR OIC Regional Director Perfecto Aranas.

On the other hand, BIR is implementing the Handang Maglingkod Project aimed at enhancing the delivery of fast, efficient and courteous "front line" services to taxpayers.

The project is expected to promote and improve voluntary taxpayers compliance.

In an interview, Tagum City Assistant Revenue District Officer Daisy Franco said taxpayers coming from far-flung areas would be able to process within one day their transactions with BIR.

"Di na sila kinahanglang mobalik pa sa sunod nga mga adlaw," she said while explaining that BIR Tagum City is serving the taxpaying public of Davao del Norte and Compostela Valley.

Implemented through Memorandum Order No. 15-2009, the Handang Maglingkod Project" runs as a nationwide competition among Revenue District Offices.

Two categories are set for the competition, namely, the National Office category and the Revenue District Office category, particularly involving offices which regularly render front line services.

Launched on May 13, 2009, the Handang Maglingkod Project will award winners in August during the BIR Anniversary celebration.

In pursuit for the Handang Maglingkod award, BIR Tagum City is initially providing a service area for its clients.

Franco said BIR Tagum will soon be putting up service counters to attend to the specific concerns of their clients and will be mounting an electronic client numbering system so front line service providers would no longer be calling clients by their names.

Service providers will also be wearing nameplates with 'Hello' signages that aims to show friendliness to clients, she said. (PIA XI/JMDA) [top]
