PGMA inaugurates bridge, brings gov't closer to people
Catarman, Northern Samar (June 15) -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo visits Northern Samar on June 16 to inaugurate the Las Navas -Catubig Bridge which is a component of the Help for Catubig Agricultural Advancement Project, a showcase on how potential hinterland area is developed into an intensive rice-producing area.
The Help for Catubig Agricultural Advancement Project (HCAAP), is a priority water sector (irrigation) project which is part of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's Medium Term Development and Investment Plan under the Super Region scheme.
The project aims to alleviate poverty by raising income level of farmers, generate employment opportunities and improve the social infrastructure and services of the target areas in Catubig and Las Navas, Northern Samar. The project components are civil works, schistosomiasis control, agricultural support services, institutional development and procurement of equipment.
The implementing agencies are the National Irrigation Administration as lead agency, the Department of Public Works and Highways, the Department of Health, Department of Agriculture, the Province of Northern Samar and the municipalities of Catubig and Las Navas.
President Arroyo will inaugurate by driving the bridge. At the other side of the bridge, the President will go down and is scheduled to walk down the bridge until the front area of the Las Navas Agro-Industrial High School where she is scheduled to have a regional media conference.
President Arroyo is also scheduled to distribute government assistance to the beneficiaries of various Comprehensive Livelihood and Emergency Employment Program (CLEEP) being implemented by the government in order to cushion the impact of the global financial crisis on the disadvantaged people of the country.
According to Presidential Assistant for Eastern Visayas, Hon. Cynthia Nierras, the President is set to distribute 1000 family food packs, 500 each to the needy people of Catubig and Las Navas through the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
The President is also scheduled to present the May and June family allowances to 250 beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program from Las Navas.
Under the Healthy Start Program, President Arroyo is set to start a 200-day feeding in 49 day care centers with 953 children. The particular program amounts to P446, 000.
Under five CLEEP programs of the Department of Agriculture Region 8, President Arroyo will distribute 2000 packs of four types of vegetable seeds; present certificate of award for ten mechanical dryers to ten farmer associations in Northern Samar; distribute P2 Million Barangay Bagsakan checks to five local government units; present certificates of completion and Turnover of farm to market roads amounting to P29 Million; and present certificate of award to HCAAP techo demo Operators and give the awardees P40,876 worth of fertilizer and farm seeds.
The Department of Health will present Botica sa Barangay certificates for operators and certificate of appreciation to Local government agencies. (PIA 8) [top]
