PIA Press Release

Business park to soon rise in Carmen, Davao Norte

by Jean Duron-Abangan

Carmen, Davao del Norte (17 June) -- Other than sprucing up the grounds of Carmen Municipal Hall and planting flowers at the islands along the highway, the town's local government is currently unfolding another flagship project- the Carmen Business Park development.

Located just across the Municipal Hall and in front of Carmen Bus Terminal, the four-hectare Carmen Business Park is one of the many significant developments in this town which has, over the years been notorious as one of the flood-prone areas in Davao del Norte.

Water still runs high during heavy rains because the town lies below sea level but the municipal government is making sure that the business park won't get flooded by increasing the elevation of the four-hectare lot which was acquired from the Bagong Lipunan Sites and Services (BLISS) Development Corp.

"Tambakan ang tibuok (fill up the whole) four hectares which was acquired from BLISS corporation. Atong gipalit ug atong gipa-tituluhan ug karon (we bought and have it titled) we have started filling-up the land developing it into the Carmen Business Park," he said in an interview.

The LGU takes a corporate approach in developing the business park. It has availed from Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP) a P17 million loan it needs to increase to fill up shallow portions of the project site thereby increasing the ground elevation. It will eventually sell the area once developed.

"Immediately, ma-recover namo ang cost of development plus the margin of profit that will go to the general fund," Perandos said. "We are operating a business like system in handling the Carmen business Park (development)," he added.

Perandos has seen the strategic location of the business park because it lies in front of the municipal and along the national highway. No wonder some local investors are already signifying interests to locate in it. He said among them were JS Gaisano and Central Warehouse.

"If that area would be fully developed, mahurot jud dayon na sa mga (would be taken up quickly by) investors," he said.

Perandos is sure that the business park would generate substantial local income from taxes and employment opportunities that his constituents in Carmen can take advantage of. (PIA XI) [top]
