10,198 from Cordillera receive gov't assistance during Independence Day celebration

Baguio City (20 June) -- A total of 10,198 beneficiaries received livelihood, training, scholarships and emergency employment assistance during the Kalayaan 2009 program held at the Baguio Convention Center.

This is in line with the directive of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to step up the implementation of the government's Comprehensive Livelihood and Emergency Employment Program (CLEEP) as the country celebrated its 111th Independence Day anniversary last June 12, 2009.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) awarded 12 livelihood checks, its their Hunger Mitigation Program, which would benefit 1,676 individuals. DENR also awarded 6,602 beneficiaries with emergency employment certificates and contracts - 6,324 under its Upland Development Program, 6 laborers for clonal nursery, 55 for land surveys and 217 for its "Bantay Gubat" program. DENR is also set to hire a total 11,700 Bantay Gubat in the Cordillera, who would each be given a P3,000 monthly allowance.

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) also awarded scholarship certificates to 75 deserving public high school graduates of the region, under the "One Town, One Scholar" program. One scholar each, especially from those family without financial means, was chosen from the 75 municipalities of the all the 6 provinces of the region. The scholars shall enjoy free tuition fee in a state colleges or university, including a P15,000.00 stipend and book allowance.

The Department of Education (DepED), on the other hand, awarded 16 emergency employment contracts, the Department of Public Works and Highways 60, the Department of Trade and Industry -39, the Philippine Military Academy -21 and 1 for the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration.

The Department of Health (DOH), through its Botika ng Barangay program awarded two livelihood checks. The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) awarded 18 livelihood checks to 18 beneficiaries under its Filipino Expatriate Livelihood Support Fund (FELSF), and five scholarship vouchers.

For DOLE, it awarded four livelihood checks, with 203 beneficiaries under its Unlad Kabuhayan or Worktrep program. It also gave out 75 emergency employment contracts under the CLEEP, through the NARS or Nurses Assigned to Rural Areas Program. This is part of the 285 nurses that will be hired for the second batch of the NARS program, which will be deployed on September 1.

For the Department of Tourism (DOT), awarded were 16 livelihood vouchers with 136 beneficiaries under its Grassroots Entrepreneurs for Eco-Tourism or GREET program. The GREET program provides grant amounting to P50,000 P100,000, to deserving groups or individuals with feasible entrepreneurial/business proposals in eco-tourism sites in Cordillera.

For training assistance, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) awarded 331 training vouchers under its Pangulong Gloria Scholarship or PGS program and three emergency employment contracts under CLEEP.

For the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), it awarded nine livelihood checks under its Self-Employment Assistance para sa Kaunlaran or SEA-K program, to nine organizations from Abra, Apayao and Mt Province. DSWD also awarded 696 emergency employment contracts, under cash for work program in nine municipalities in Abra and two towns in Apayao.

The CLEEP stewards for Cordillera, DSWD Secretary Esperanza Cabral and DENR Sec Lito Atienza, represented by Undersecretary Eleazar Quinto, led the awarding and were assisted by DOLE-CAR regional director Ana Dione and the other regional directors. (PIA) [top]
