Mindanao Trade Expo to stage comeback this year

Davao City (25 June) -- Despite the global financial crunch, Mindanao is out to prove the world that trade is much alive in this part of the country.

Expecting an estimated 100 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), this year's Mindanao Trade Expo is making a bold move to showcase and promote Mindanao products.

MTE '09 is scheduled on August 13 to 16 at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Convention Hall embracing a special setting of Philippine Fiber. MTE Foundation Incorporated President Anne Pamintuan told the media in yesterday's Press Launching that it is Mindanao's way of celebrating the year of the International Fiber.

Pamintuan stressed that this year's MTE is going to be bold as it stages a come back from an absence last year.

The foundation, she said, had seen the need to bring back this biggest trade expo in Mindanao just in time to help medium and small enterprises cope with the harsh effects of the global meltdown.

This year, the expo is supported by different partner organizations like the Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Agriculture, Growth with Equity in Mindanao3 Program, Export Development Council, Philexport, USAid, and Medco.

Making a name since 1996, MTE has become known nationwide and even in the global arena. It has gained the trust of about 1,590 exhibitors, 577 buyers, and has generated sales of about P630 million, booked sales of P147 million, P431 million sales under negotiation, and P51 million retail sales. Most importantly, this annual expo has touched about 162,000 lives in 12 years now.

This year, MTE organizers are targeting to generate P30 million cash and booked sales and gather 50 institutional buyers and at least 100 exhibitors.

Also during the expo is the conduct of an Exports' Forum wherein different stakeholders can discuss and find remedies in facing the worldwide economic downturn.

Pamintuan said that the forum is aimed at drawing up a workable roadmap that will enable the export sector maintain their businesses even during this hard times. (PIA XI) [top]
