Davao City (26 June) -- Hundreds of volunteers coming from different organizations and national government agencies converged early this morning at the Riverfront entrance along Diversion road, Maa Davao City for the opening program of Arbor Day Celebration.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) XI in coordination with the Association of the Regional Executives of National Agencies (ARENA) XI spearheaded the activity in response Presidential Proclamation No. 396, dated June 2, 2003.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo declared June 25 of every year as Philippine Arbor Day, by way of Presidential Proclamation No. 396, to be observed nationwide by planting trees and ornamental plants through appropriate ceremonies.
Six (6) barangays near the Davao River has been identified to be planting area namely barangay – Tigatto, Mandug, Callawa, Waan, New Carmen and New Valencia.
Volunteers plant at least thousands of Malibago seedlings on both sides of Davao River, a specie that is endemic, fast growing and has capacity to regenerate by itself and more importantly effective in preventing riverbanks from erosion.
Hon. Isidro T Ungab, Congressman of the 3rd District, Davao City, in his speech during the opening program urged the volunteers to assert advocacy in the protection of Davao River.
The activity brings to the senses to the volunteers the vital role of trees in our environment and human life. Planting more and preserving our remaining forest cover will ensure the continuous, adequate and good quality of water supply. (PIA-XI) [top]
