Military in Region 8 continues to win battle for peace

Tacloban City (June 29) -- The military in Region 8 continues in its unceasing quest for peace in Eastern Visayas.

Just recently, one NPA rebel and two others were wounded in an encounter between the rebels and the military in Leyte, Major General Arthur Tabaquero, the commanding general of the 8th Infantry Division informed.

General Tabaquero said that the troops of the 19th Infantry Battalion based in Kananga, Leyte, responding to the text message from civilians on the presence of armed men in the area, conducted security operations at Barangay Bunga of the town of Leyte in the province of Leyte, where they encountered 15 communist rebels.

The firefight lasted for more than 15 minutes and resulted to the killing of one NPA and wounding of another.

One soldier was slightly wounded in the encounter, General Tabaquero added, saying that pursuit operations are currently being conducted by the government troopers on the rebels who withdrew to the forested area of the barangay.

Earlier, government troops on security operations have discovered an abandoned abandoned camp in Leyte, General Tabaquero disclosed.

The troopers of the Charlie Company of the 19th Infantry Battalion based in Kananga, Leyte while on a combat operations have disclosed an abandoned NPA camp in Sitio Maibga, Barangay Cagbana, Burauen, Leyte.

It was reported that the soldiers of the Charlie Company went to the said area to verify reports on the presence of the rebel camp in the sitio. The reports, General Tabaquero said came from the text messages of concerned residents.

Upon arriving in the area mentioned, the troops the abandoned camp with 50 makeshift huts and recovered 2 generator sets (12 v Honda), 5 pieces hard disk drive, 1 unit ICOM, 1 NPA flag, 2 units printer, 559 rounds of ammunitions for M14 rifles, 29 rounds of ammunitions for Garand M1 rifle, 25 pieces assorted CDs and 9 sacks of subversive documents.

"Apparently the rebels did not want to engage on a firefight with the government troops that's why they abandoned the camp as the soldiers were approaching the area," eneral Tabaquero said.

General Tabaquero, during the recent visit of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo at Las Navas, Northern Samar said that the military is winning the war against insurgency.

"The rebels are losing in every front, losing their mass support in the barangays and struggling with the issues from within." These are the reasons why General Tabaquero expressed his belief that President Arroyo's campaign to get rid of the insurgency in 2010, is achievable. (PIA 8) [top]
