Expo to showcase Mindanao fibers

By Mai Gevera

Davao City (30 June) -- Products made from various fibers in Mindanao will be the highlight in the coming Mindanao Trade Expo 2009 at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Convention Hall on August 13 to 16.

MTEFI president Ann Pamintuan announced that this showcase will make the expo a lot unique from the previous staging of this annual event.

According to Pamintuan, this is the foundation's support to the celebration of the Year of the Fiber and at the same time open opportunities to Mindanao's small and medium entrepreneurs taking advantage of existing fibers found in Mindanao.

"When we tell our visitors that we have these fibers here, we are actually opening up windows of opportunities for our SMEs. One opportunity is for us to supply our potential clients who are into the production of fiber-based products with raw materials. Moreover, we can also give an impression that if they get fiber-based finished products here, they are assured of volume since we are rich in raw materials." she said.

Mae Alcantara of Crystal Seas explained that weavers are now very rare to see in the Philippines. Only very few nowadays do hand weaving which makes weaved products high valued and priced well in the market.

"Let's encourage weavers who are mostly indigenous people to be updated with today's trends and prices in the market. This activity is one way of keeping these talents here in the country instead of working abroad," Alcantara said.

Betty More of Katakus Foundation also stressed that patronizing products made from Mindanao fibers helps a lot of Mindanawons who rely mostly on weaving.

MTE 2009 targets to gather at least 100 micro, small and medium enterprises from all over Mindanao, showcasing and promoting various products from processed food to fashion accessories. (PIA XI) [top]
