Maasin City, Southern Leyte offer mass for former President Aquino

By R.G. Cadavos

Maasin City, Southern Leyte (6 August) -- Provincial and Maasin City officials here offered mass yesterday, August 5, the day former President Corazon Aquino was buried. The mass celebrated by Bishop Precioso D. Cantillas was attended by Provincial and Maasin City Officials led by Gov. Damian G. Mercado and Mayor Maloney Samaco, respectively.

The concelebrated Mass at 8:30 in the morning, 30 minutes before the Requiem Mass for Pres. Aquino at the Manila Cahtedral was held at the Lady of Assumption Parish Cathedral here, participated by at least 6 parish priests throughout the city.

A source who also attended the Holy Eucharist defined the undertaking as a solemn one, mourning for the passing of "Tita Cory" as what the priests called her in their Homily and some prepared messages that was read. Many of the parishioners who attended wore yellow dresses, though some also dressed either in white or black.

Yellow ribbons surrounding the Maasin cathedral and in the vicinity of the Maasin Parish Convent were seen and a tarpaulin having picture of ex-Pres. Cory was read "Thank you Tita Cory for giving us love and freedon".

In Maasin City, Mayor Samaco released Memorandum Circular No. 155 directing all Heads of offices, employees and elected officials to attend the scheduled Maas to join the whole nation as it mourns for the death of the former lady president. "Let us unite in prayers for her eternal repose," the message said.

While Gov. Mercado issued Memo Circular No. 093 also directed provincial officials and employees to do the same, and noted that "in gratitude for Pres. Aquino's profound love of our country and deep faith in God." (PIA-soleyte) [top]
