Army engineers turn over another school building to farflung Eastern Samar barangay

By Alice Nicart

Borongan City (5 October) -- With another faster construction period, the 546th Engineering Construction Battalion, 53rd Engineering Brigade, Philippine Army, finished again in barely 60 days a two-room classroom building and recently turned over the same to the barangay local government unit of barangay Tagaslian, Maydolong, Eastern Samar.

Financed under President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's Kalayaan Barangay Program (KBP) the P700,000.00 worth school building sits in a valley of a forested barangay, which is 18-kilometer off of Maydolong town.

Chairman Dorna Busa is now assured the building will now give comfort to the Primary multigraders who used to content in a dilapidated wooden classroom.

"We are so lucky to have this blessing," DepEd Supervisor Godofredo T. Garado said in his acceptance speech. He also urged the community to protect the building because according to him "this is a very rare reward of the government," specially that the construction materials had to be transported up to the hilly village notwithstanding the rough roads leading there to.

In a simple ceremony at the barangay plaza, Lt. Col. Krestofel Kiamco, Commanding Officer of the Engineering Bridage, presented the keys of the classrooms to Supervisor Garado and Mrs. Nida Duque, Teacher-in-Charge and he also thanked the local residents for the support extended to them during the construction.

Mrs. Nida Duque, Teacher-in-Charge, proclaimed that it has been the best gift, government has ever given them.

"We have long wanted and waited for this blessing to reach us. With the toilets in each of the rooms, we can also teach our pupils how to use them and how important it is to have this facility in the home," Duque said.

Col. Kiamco stressed, that the KBP Project of the President implements in identified barangays, five component projects: school buildings, health centers, barangay lights, water system and farm-to-market roads.

He also added that his team is likewise about to develop at least a Level-II water facility for the Tagaslian villagers, however, the source which is way deep down below the hilly barangay drags on the process.

The soft-spoken Commander also bragged that the President's project gave short term employment to some local residents, whom they employed as laborers. Two similar projects have also been turned over recently; one in barangay Cantomco, Llorente, the other in San Gabriel, Borongan and a Day Care Center in Can-ato, Llorente.

Asked if the peace and order situation hampers their project implementation, the 1978 PMA Class Member replied in the negative.

"Maybe because our objective is transparent which is for the good of our people," the CO humbly smiled.

The monochromatic- green-painted two-classroom building was blessed by Rev. Fr. Bernard Aljibe.

The simple ceremony was attended by Sangguniang Bayan Member Fidel Araba who represented Mayor Baldono with his staff and the local media. (PIA-Eastern Samar) [top]
