Lumads, local officials condemn spate of killings by NPA

Camp Apolinario, Panacan, Davao City (13 October) -- Lumad leaders and Barangay Officials condemned the series of killings by Local terrorists (NPA) targeting Lumads and Barangay officials in a tribal assembly of Manguangan and Dibabawon tribes at the town's gym in Montevista, Compostella Valley Province Wednesday morning October 7, 2009.

Montevisita Mayor Teopista Jaud joined Datu Herminio "Sidlak" Opao, the town's tribal chieftain together with Barangay Officials and different tribal leaders in condemning the atrocious acts of NPA bandits. Brgy Officials and tribal leaders particularly condemned the recent murder of Canidkid Barangay Chairman Glorieto Mahumas, who was gunned down by local terrorists last September 23, 2009 at Poblacion, Montevista.

In addressing the participants, tribal leaders outlined the roles of Indigenous Peoples in attaining lasting peace and sought the help of authorities in bringing the perpetrators of crimes against Lumads in the bar of justice. The LGU and tribal leaders also acknowledged the peace and development roles of the soldiers represented by Lt. Col Royland Orquia of the 3rd Special Forces Battallion who graced the occasion in light of the invitation of tribal leaders.

Col. Eduardo Del Rosario, commander of the army's 1003rd Brigade appealed to human rights advocate groups like Karapatan, Anak Pawis, Gabriela, Bayan Muna and Pasaka to investigate and file criminal cases against the NPAs. Del Rosario said: "I am calling the attention of these groups to publicly denounce the atrocities of the NPAs committed against the people, especially the helpless Lumads whom they have victimized and manipulated."

"I am also calling all my brother Lumads, to take extra caution in joining or associating with sectoral groups who declare themselves as social and human rights advocates, but in reality, serve as the legal fronts of the CPP/NPA," Del Rosario Added. (10th ID, PA) [top]
