NPA leader yields in Davao Oriental

Camp Apolinario, Panacan, Davao City (14 October) -- A ranking NPA member surrendered to authorities in Brgy Libudon in Mati Town in Davao Oriental 8:00 AM Friday October 9, 2009.

Mario Vargas Panganuron @ Yoyo, team leader of Local Terrorist Propaganda Unit, Squad-3, Baking Team, Local Terrorist Area-18 (LTA-18) voluntarily surrendered to troops of 28th Infantry Battalion under Lt. Col. Ferdinand Budeng. Panganuron was accompanied by some barangay officials who facilitated his peaceful surrender.

Lt. Col. Budeng lauded the efforts of local officials of Mati in bringing back Panganuron into the folds of the law. Budeng said, "The partnership of LGU and the people with soldiers in the over-all efforts towards peace has been instrumental in bringing back many of our brothers and we are hoping that many more will surrender in the interest of peace."

"We are calling on our brothers still up on the mountains to take the right step and lay down their arms so that they can avail of the Social Integration Program of the government and live a normal life with their families," Budeng added.

The Social Integration Program (SIP) is a comprehensive reintegration scheme of the government to bring rebels back into the mainstream of the society. As of this writing, more than 20 rebel returnees have fully benefitted from the SIP. (Cpt Emmanuel R Garcia (INF) PA Chief, Division Public Affairs Office) [top]
