Davao City (15 October) -- In observance of the National Week for Overcoming Extreme Poverty (NWOEP), the Philippine Government joins the United Nations in its Stand United, Fight Poverty (SUFP) Campaign slated on October 16-18.

Now in its fourth year, SUFP is a three-day global mobilization that aims to send a loud and clear message to world leaders and decision-makers to take urgent action to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. Further, it hopes to break the Guinness World Record for attaining the largest number of people participating in a single event.

The anti-poverty campaign focuses on four major Millennium Development Goals: eradicate extreme poverty and hunger; achieve universal primary education; improve maternal health; and combat HIV/AIDS.

According to the UN, the achievement of the MDGs remains a priority on the global political and public agenda. The campaign aims to convey the urgency of attaining the MDGs and end extreme poverty by 2015.

In support to the campaign, DSWD Region XI shall conduct simultaneous cluster meetings and assemblies of beneficiaries of Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), Self Employment Assistance-Kaunlaran Program (SEA-K) and Tindahan Natin Project.

Meanwhile, LGU officials, KALAHI-CIDSS leaders and volunteers and some students in Sto. Tomas and Talaingod will participate in the Exhibits, Creative Presentations and Various Competitions in Brgy. Sto. Nino, Talaingod.

Other actions that could be mounted include Food Distribution, Seed and Fertilizer Distribution, Reconstructing Community Schools, Book Donation, Blood Donation, Medical Mission, Tree Planting, Clean-Up Drive, Technology Fair, Waste Recycling, Car Pooling, Letters of Support, Posting of Banners, Poster and Essay Competition, Prayer and Worship, Public Concert, Marches and Parades, Teach-ins on MDGs, Fasting, and Information Campaign through Electronic Mass and Media.
