Region XI gets guidelines on disaster risk reduction

By Mai Gevera

Davao City (16 October) -- Region XI through local government units, research organizations, and the private sector will now have a sound basis in pushing for their own disaster risk reduction program.

The National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) is now assisting these organizations by developing templates of risk reduction methodologies complemented with technical assistance that can be adjusted to suit each of the organization's profile and needs.

In yesterday's 9th Neda Board Meeting held at the Waterfront Insular Hotel, Davao City, NEDA Regional Development Secretary Susan Rachel Jose announced the launching of the DRR Program at Sub-national level Development and is now ready for replication in other regions and provinces.

This program is funded by AusAID (Australia Aid) and the UNDP (United National Development Programme).

"It took us a year to formulate these guidelines and tested these methodologies in Regions 1 and 13 and Surigao del Norte," she said.

The pilot areas were studied as to the possible exposed elements for disaster, facilities as well as number of individuals who may possibly be affected when a disaster strikes.

Jose explained that the output of the methodology results were used as input to the local government's development plan as well as the respective plans and directions of the various organizations tapped as partners in this program.

The template ready to be applied in sub-national levels nationwide has also been incorporated with the dimensions of climate change.

"Although we cannot really say that we are in the state of climate change, Neda would like to see a pro-active approach on the part of the local government units in addressing this issue." Jose said. (PIA XI) [top]
