DOST XI upgrades coop's banana flour production
Davao City (17 October) -- A celebration of productivity- this is how the Andres M. Soriano Employees Fresh Fruits Producers Cooperative (AMSEFFPCO) members expressed their stance as they celebrated their 7th Founding Anniversary on October 8, 2009 at the AMSEFFPCO Livelihood and Research Center, Sampao, Kapalong, Davao del Norte.
AMSEFFPCO is an organization of 97 Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries (ARB) of AMS Farming Corporation which was awarded with 75 hectares of agricultural land planted with Cavendish bananas for export. The land was acquired from Don Alberto Marfori Soriano through the Department of Agrarian Reform Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program.
AMSEFFPCO was awarded by Her Excellency President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo as the Most Outstanding Micro Small and Medium Enterprise (Medium Category-Mindanao Island) last July 8, 2009 at SM Mega Mall, Mandaluyong City.
AMSEFFPCO's income generating livelihood projects include: banana processing plant services, agricultural supplies, banana flour production, and bio-organic production/vermi composting.
In line with AMSSEFFPCO's objective of expanding its production and to go full blast with its food grade banana flour production, the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office No. XI (DOST XI) has extended its assistance to AMSEFFPCO through the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP).
To improve product quality, the DOST XI funded two (2) equipment namely, the Hammer Mill and Chipping Machine, amounting to Five Hundred Thousand Pesos (P500, 000.00). The Hammermill was turned over to AMSEFFCO during its 7th Founding Anniversary Celebration at Kapalong, Davao del Norte.
A hammermill is essential to AMSEFFPCO to produce food grade banana flour. At present AMSEFFPCO is only producing 1 ton of banana flour. With DOST XI's hammermill, the cooperative can now produce 4 tons of banana flour which can meet the demand of their market. DOST through the Davao Food Safety Team (DFST) also assisted AMSEFFPCO in the plant layout of their Banana Flour Processing Plant in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). The Banana Flour Processing Plant was also inaugurated during the 7th Founding Anniversary.
In behalf of the Regional Director, Dr. Anthony C. Sales, The Davao del Norte Provincial Director, Engr. Judy Donna A. Nueva Ecija committed to work hand in hand with the national agencies and the Local Government Unit (LGU) for the progressive pursuit of AMSEFFPCO's leaps and bounds of success. "DOST commit to provide Human Resource Trainings on GMP and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) to guarantee that the banana flour produced is safe for human consumption," Engr.
