DOT sees prospects in adventure island package

by RG Alama

Davao City (20 October) -- The Department of Tourism Region XI is seeing a boost in tourism with recent private-sector led efforts in Talicud Island.

Wind and Wave Davao, a Davao City-based diving, aquasports and leisure company is now offering its adventure island package in Talicud island based at Dayang Beach Resort. Wind and Wave has provided leisure facilities and equipment in the island like All-Terrain vehicle, banana boats, jet skis, bubble walk, speed boats, kayaks, wakeboard among many other outdoor adventure attractions.

DOT regional director Sonia Garcia said that the region used to lack leisure products other than diving and snorkeling that could help in enticing more tourists to visit the islands of Samal and Talicud.

"At least ngayon may mapuntahan for more activities not just diving and snorkeling. And it's affordable," Garcia said.

She said that 90% of region's tourists are domestic hence the need for the region to promote itself as a leisure destination. Garcia said that the Dayang Resort project is a mass commercial tourism which will attract people to the less crowded Talicud Island.

She said aside from the usual beach destinations like Paradise Island, the Wind and Wave package would be able to boost tourism in the secluded beach attractions particularly in Talicud which also boasts of fine beaches and diving spots.

The regional director also said that travel agents are now selling Samal island now that with these adventure packages. They are targeting a travel fair in Taipei where travel agents will get the chance to sell Talicud as the adventure island.

With more leisure packages Garcia hopes is confident with the growth of tourism arrivals in the region. She said that for this part of the year they have already recorded 700,000 tourism arrivals which is the same figure for the whole 2008. (PIA XI) [top]
