Terrorists' victims in Southern Mindanao region rise to 83 at yearend

Camp Apolinario, Panacan, Davao City (5 January) -- The reported 79 people killed by NPA terrorists in Southern Mindanao region climbed to 83 at yearend.

It may be recalled that records from authorities starting January 3 to December 17, 2009 list 79 fatalities; however, several killings were recorded from December 21 to 28 which add Teofilo Bugcal Lerita of Sitio Crossing, Brgy Malabog, Paquibato District Davao City who was shot to death by local terrorists posing as soldiers by wearing military uniforms with Task Force Davao patches on December 21.

Another fatality, Cipriano Albores was shot to death by terrorists at his residence at Sitio Tungan, Brgy Kinangan, Malita Davao del Sur on December 28.

Two more victims were included as investigations developed linking NPA terrorists in the killings. The list show Jaime Villafani, a militiaman of Purok 6, Brgy Mangayon, Compostela, Comval province who was shot to death by motorcycle riding gunmen on December 5 while Benafloro Peladas, a village official was also gunned down by men of Leoncio Pitao, a local terrorist leader in Sitio Kibaton, Dominga, Calinan District, Davao City on December 8.

Several other killings in 2009 and in the past are now being investigated by authorities for possible link to NPA death squads. (10th ID) [top]
