Davao City (6 January) -- The first Mayor Edgardo L. Timbol Gurolympics launching assembled 511 teachers from the entire Kapalong at the Municipal Gymnasium, Maniki, Kapalong, Davao del Norte, December 11, 2009.

Mayor Edgardo Timbol spearheaded the activity, which anchored on the theme, "Strong Partnership: a foundation to unity and progress." It aims to strengthen the partnership of the Local Government Unit of Kapalong and the Department of Education in providing basic education to the Kapalongians. In addition, the Gurolympics envisions to recognize the valuable role of the teachers in molding the young into better and responsible citizens in the community.

Moreover, the Local Chief Executive initiated the event to give at least one day of recreation for the teachers and to have fun through the games and party, which the LGU prepared in coordination with the federation of PTCA of Kapalong.

Vice-Governor Victorio Suaybaguio graced the occasion. In his message, he appreciated the strong bond of the Local Government and the Department of Education."Congratulations to the LGU- Kapalong elected-officials sa inyong dako og hugot nga pagsuporta sa atong magtutudlo," Suaybaguio said. "This Gurolympics provides lovely relationship between the two parties (LGU and DepEd). Nakit-an nako ang inyong panaghiusa sa usa ka pamilya, " he added.

The assembly composed of Pre-school, Elementary, Secondary and Tertiary teachers coming from the different barangays of the municipality was dubbed as 1st Edgardo L. Timbol Gurolympics. As the title itself presents, it happened for the first time in the history of Kapalong. The group was divided into eight teams: White, Pink, Green, Violet, Black, Yellow, Blue, and Orange team.

In order for them to mingle with their fellow educators from other schools and build strong camaraderie among their teammates, teachers from every school were evenly distributed to the eighth teams. The teams competed in the parlor games prepared such as Team Sack race; Bakya Race; Egg relay; Pass, blow, and sing; and, Cup in a Thread. The whole morning was a jubilant one as the teachers themselves really enjoyed the program stored for them.

"This activity is just but the start of this gurolympics. We will see to it that you will enjoy more this undertaking as we celebrate it next year and the years to come. This is our simple way of giving back to you your sacrifices not only for our students but for the community in general." Mayor Timbol expressed.

Other key officials present were BM Roger Israel and the rest of the SB Members headed by Vice Mayor Romy C. Estrada.

BM Larry Caminero in his speech informed the teachers that the Sangguniang Bayan of Kapalong is contemplating for an ordinance institutionalizing the said celebration every year.

During the fellowship night, from being the channels of knowledge, the educators transformed into spectacular stage performers. Series of dance numbers and choral presentation were witnessed on that night. Their performance really proved that teachers are versatile…… they are not only good in the field of teaching but they are also excellent in the entertainment world.

Timbol is anticipating for the continuous alliance and collaboration of the LGU and the DepEd in working out as one… as catalyst of change for the welfare of the constituents of Kapalong. (Cj/Noneth- MIO Kapalong) [top]
