PRA sees Davao as ideal retiree destination

Davao City (16 January) -- The Philippine Retirement Authority is looking to promote Davao City as an ideal retirement haven despite the spate of negative publicity in the region in recent months.
PRA regional chief Jaime Llanes, guesting last Friday (Jan. 15) at Kapihan sa PIA (Philippine Information Agency) said that the Maguindanao massacre has also affected the retirement industry.
Despite these, the industry is still upbeat as the Authority together with the tourism sector is aiming to promote the city as an ideal island-to-highland destination.
Llanes compares the booming retirement industry in Baguio to Davao. " Baguio only has mountains to offer, while Davao can offer beaches, mountains and other sceneries."
Currently there are 300 PRA-registered retirees in Davao. Majority of which he says are from China, with a number coming from South Korea, Europe and the United States.
He says the low cost of living is one of the primary reasons why retirees chose to retire in the country. The pension they received which would be paltry compared to the high standard of living in their country would be more than adequately support their stay here.
As for Davao he says, the factors they are promoting is that it is typhoon free, the strictly enforced smoking and firecracker ban and the peaceful environment the city enjoy.
Llanes says that having retirees is like having tourists stay for longer period of time. "It's like having a tourist every day." He says. They also contribute to the economy as most of these retirees engaged in businesses during their stay. He cites a recent German retiree, a recently-retired airline pilot, who decided to invest in different businesses in Davao City particularly in car and leisure vehicle rentals. (PIA XI) [top]
