Davao City (30 January) -- "The year 2009 was a good year for us although problems were encountered, but price increase was controlled with the help of the Department of Agriculture and local NGOs who also contribute to the production of vegetables," Ray Acain, president of the Southeastern Mindanao Vegetable Council said during a forum held in Eagle's Bar at Marco Polo last January 20, 2010.
Although price increase was clearly monitored by the council, the council admitted that there will be an expected price increase this January because of climate change.
"Organic farming is not allowable at the moment" Acain answered when asked about the possibility of Organic Farming as an alternative way to produce vegetables. Organic farming was encouraged in order to lessen the usage of pesticide. "However, it is impossible to go purely organic because we have to produce a huge volume to supply the whole areas of the country. " Mr. Cangrejo further explained. (PIA XI) [top]
